Located in the center of the historic village of Rhinebeck, we are a fully equipped pottery school and community of ceramic artists who will instruct and support the beginning potter or inspire and consult with experienced artisans. ADULTS

All classes for adults cover throwing on the wheel, handbuilding, trimming and decorating techniques. Intermediate to advanced students may work on larger vessels, lidded pots, handles or refining form and surface while beginners will focus on developing basic throwing and trimming skills and learning about the many options for finishing and decoration. Students of all levels work together to inspire and challenge each other. While our main focus is on functional work, students more interested in sculpture are also welcome. Students will define their own goals and projects. Instructors will support and teach each student at their own level.

Our adult classes include all clay and glazes. Community tools are available at the studio, or students can buy their own personal tool kit for $15. Firing fees (FF) are .03 cents/cubic inch and apply to all students except birthday party attendees.

Adult Class (includes 25 + hrs. of Open Studio a week):

10 weeks _ $375/ or 5 weeks _ $200/ or 1 week _ $45

**Mandatory Studio Orientation: This option is for people who need no instruction and are familiar with the whole process. We'll give you a studio orientation and you'll be on your way in a few minutes!

CHILDREN and TEENS

We offer Children's, Teens' and Family classes, Birthday Parties and Private Lessons. Our Children's class focuses on learning the skills of throwing and handbuilding while having fun! Students choose their own projects: pots, animals, masks, beads, and more. Our instructors will work with each child at their own level. Let's use our imaginations and our hands!

Our Teens' class will teach or review the basics of throwing, trimming, handbuilding and decoration while developing a consideration for the basic elements of design. Students choose their own goals and instructors support them individually.

The Family class provides an opportunity for kids and their parents to share the creative experience of working in clay together! The content is the same as above depending on the ages of participants. Spend some quality time together and make some pottery!

Families who want some extra practice in the studio can attend the Family Open Studio on Sundays from 10:30 - 2:30 for $10.00/ child. This is a great way for parents to share what they've learned with their children, even if children are not enrolled in a Hudson Valley Pottery class. Children must be monitored by parents in the studio.

We also offer private lessons for students who prefer individual attention. We take individuals, pairs or small groups for private lessons. More than one hour may be booked at a time. Students will work on specific, defined goals: centering, pulling a wall up evenly, trimming a bowl, etc. Walk-ins will be accomodated whenever possible, but reservations are recommended.

Hudson Valley Pottery would love to host your birthday party or group event. Kids and adults alike enjoy working in clay; make your party a memorable one! Each participant will make a handbuilt project of their choice and will have individual instruction and practice on the pottery wheel. Firing fees are included and projects will be available for pickup within three weeks. Your guests will have a very personal handmade souvenir from your gathering! Teens/Kids/Family Classes: Students may attend alone or with parents. No Open Studio. $250/student for 10 classes or $140/student for 5 class or $30/student for 1 class

New students are welcome any time. The next firing is tentatively scheduled for 2/1/12. Greenware shelves will be CLEARED of work older than 3 months and unlabeled work on 1/26/2012. Make sure your work is labeled and move it to bisque or reclaim it if it is more than 3 months old. Thanks. All Open Studio hours are in effect. Interested in having your work photographed? Hudson Valley Pottery will photograph student work for $5.00 an image. If we post it on the website or Facebook with your permission, we'll give you the full resolution file for free.

ABOUT US

The Hudson Valley Pottery school and studio is place where members of the community can enrich their lives by exploring the world of ceramic arts. We are a fully equipped studio with eight wheels for instruction, two electric kilns, a high fire gas kiln for Cone 10 glazes, a glazing room, pugmill mixer, photo booth and more. Our staff of accomplished potters have years of instructional experience working with students of all levels. They focus on both technique and expanding creative boundaries.

As important as the scheduled class time is the extensive Open Studio time available to enrolled students. We like to see people in the studio practicing and working on their own creations. We have many experienced students who have been coming for years who are usually available and eager to provide coaching and assistance during these open sessions. Many friendships have started with their hands working with clay in our well lit and inviting space. In a short time you will become a member of our community of artists.

We also offer studio memberships for experienced potters who are looking for a place to practice their craft. We have competitive prices on glazes and firing fees.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Alexis

After leaving a ten-year career as an award winning middle school special educator, Alexis Feldheim reconsidered her passions and went back to school; first for commercial art and then for fine art, with a focus on ceramics. She practices varied ways of making artwork and crafts including photography, collage, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, jewelry and pottery.

Although Alexis continues to be interested in new materials, processes, techniques, and concepts in art, clay holds a special place in her heart. The variety of material, form, surface, texture, color and techniques offer endless possibilities; and the process of throwing can be meditative. Although science explains what happens to glazes and clay in the kiln, the myriad factors to control add unpredictability and mystery to the process.

In 2008, Alexis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the State University of New York at New Paltz with high honors. The title piece of her thesis work, Overcome was shown at the Barrett Art Centers New Directions: 08 exhibit in Poughkeepsie, NY. Overcome won an honorable mention from curator Asher Miller of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 2010, Alexis worked with a committee to run the Hudson Valley Pottery as a non-profit, before its current incarnation. Alexis is grateful to have been given the opportunity to manage the Hudson Valley Pottery, and especially to be able to use her teaching skills to share what she has learned about ceramics with students of all ages and abilities. She is enthusiastic about the future of the pottery and the community of people it serves.

Meg

Meg Oliver received her BFA from NYSCC at Alfred University (2004) and her BA from Colby College (1996). In 2003 she received the Kiki Smith Scholarship to Haystack School of Arts and Crafts and a residency in ceramics for the summer months at Byrdcliffe. In May of 2005 Meg assumed the position of Resident director of Ceramics at the Byrdcliffe Artists Colony which she gave up in October 2006 after curating a show of past ceramic residents in favor of making pots. She was a Searchlight Artist at the 2007 American Craft Council Flagship Show in Baltimore, MD. Meg has taught ceramics at Byrdcliffe since 2003, Hudson Valley Pottery in Rhinebeck since 2005, at Greenwich House Pottery in NYC since 2009.

Lauren

Lauren Sandler is a studio artist working in the Hudson Valley. Most recently she finished a two year residency at The Clay Studio of Missoula in Montana. Prior to that she was living in Philadelphia where she taught at various colleges and art centers. She has undergraduate degrees in Anthropology and Ceramics and an MFA in Ceramics from Penn State University. Her work can be seen at laurensandlerstudio.com

Ali

Ali received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an emphasis in Art Therapy. She received her Masters Degree in Social Work and is currently a social worker at a residential treatment facility for emotionally disturbed children in Rhinebeck, NY. She teaches art classes to the children at the residence and also creates art during therapy sessions with the children. Ali has worked at Hudson Valley Pottery for 6 years, and is currently teaching the teen wheel class.

Working with clay is one of her ways of keeping in touch with the peace, beauty, and humor in the world.

Our studio/school at 18 Garden Street is one block west of the Route 9 and Market St intersection in the very center of Rhinebeck. Our building is just opposite the parking lot behind Upstate Films.

By car we are easily accessible from the Taconic Parkway to the east and the NYS Thruway Route 87 to the west.

The Amtrak Rhinecliff train station is 5 minutes away. A cab can bring you into the village of Rhinebeck where you can walk to the studio and numerous excellent restaurants and unique shopping venues. The Beekman Arms, the oldest operating inn in the America, has beautiful hotel rooms on both sides of our studio. There are also a number of Bed and Breakfasts in walkng distance or a short cab ride away.

If you decide to come by train from NYC you could spend a few hours taking private classes with one our instructors and enjoy your free time exploring by foot. No need for a car. On Sundays the popular Rhinebeck Farmer’s Market attracts locals and visitors. The not-for-profit Upstate Films movie theater attracts people from the entire region to watch an eclectic mix of independent and foreign films and is just across the street.

With a car you can explore the environs around Rhinebeck which is in the center of the ‘Great Estates Region’; a section of the Hudson River Valley famous for the estates established along the east bank of the river in the 18th and 19th centuries including Vanderbilt, Mills, Wilderstein, Locust Grove, Olana and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt home and library.

Moring Studio

Ann Moring is a long time resident of Rhinebeck and has been painting and drawing for the past 26 years. She remembers finding a deep sense of peace even in her first simple drawings in elementary school. Years later when she worked in Detroit as a boycott organizer for the United Farm Workers, the need to create banners, posters and leaflets inspired her to take the challenge and begin her journey as an artist. She started formal training at an art school in Detroit.

After receiving a Masters degree in social work, Ann practiced full time while raising her two children, but in the last six years she has chosen to focus exclusively on her "first love", art. She has continued her training with several artists/teachers in Dutchess Co. and is a member of the Tivoli Artists Coop and Barrett Art Center. She works with oils, charcoal and watercolors.

Ann has always loved nature - its color, light and energy. In all her work - landscapes, still lifes, figure drawings and portraits - the goal is to illuminate the mystery of a single moment.
